The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will present what it calls the “True State of the Nation Address” on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
The event comes in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, which the NPP claims failed to provide a full and accurate picture of Ghana’s current state.
According to the party, President Mahama’s address omitted several critical issues affecting the country. “In just a few weeks under his administration, alarming developments have surfaced,” the NPP stated.
Among these, the party highlighted a deteriorating power supply, which it says is threatening businesses and livelihoods, as well as a decline in national security, particularly in the northern regions.
The NPP also pointed to the resurgence of illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” along with violent incidents in Obuasi, as a major concern.
Additionally, the party criticised the government’s decision to cancel public sector recruitments and appointments, arguing that it has worsened unemployment and deepened economic uncertainty.
“These urgent national challenges were conspicuously absent from President Mahama’s address,” the NPP said. The party emphasized that the State of the Nation Address, as mandated by Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, is meant to provide an honest and comprehensive update on national affairs.”
Unfortunately, the address delivered by the President fell short of this obligation,” the party stated.
To address these perceived gaps, the NPP says its leadership in Parliament, led by Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, will present the “True State of the Nation Address” to provide what it calls a “factual and objective account” of Ghana’s current condition.
“We remain committed to ensuring transparency, accountability, and responsible governance,” the party added.
The statement was signed by Stephen Ayesu Ntim, the National Chairman of the NPP.
