The Youth Wing of the National Democratic Congress says the announced increase in allowances for service personnel from GH₵ 559.04 to GH₵ 715.57 is woefully inadequate.

The Youth Wing noted in a statement on Monday, July 24, 2023, that the 27% upward adjustment is not adequate, citing the rate of inflation and the general high cost of living.

“The current allowance does not align with the high cost of living, especially considering the increasing accommodation expenses, with over 50% of service personnel residing in rented apartments. The recent price hikes in essential goods and services further exacerbate the situation.”

“Service personnel endure months without their allowance, making it evident that the government needs to do more to fulfill its responsibilities”, the statement continued.

According to them, the government has been insensitive and politically expedient with the increase.

The party argued that a 60% increment in NSS allowance from GH₵350 to GH₵ 559.04 with a 17% inflation rate during John Mahama’s administration demonstrates genuine leadership as opposed to the ruling administration.

They stressed that a “meaningful” increase is important and should correspond with the present cost of living situation.

On July 23, 2023, the National Service Scheme announced the new rate of GH₵ 715.57 after consultations between the management of the scheme, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the Finance Ministry.
