Parliament has formally launched an investigation to identify the Member of Parliament (MP) responsible for an offensive remark directed at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the MP for Klottey Korle, during a heated parliamentary sitting on February 4, 2025.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, made the announcement while issuing an official apology to Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings, her family, and the chiefs and people of Anlo State.

The offensive remark, “daughter of a murderer,” was shouted by an unidentified MP during a debate commemorating the 60th anniversary of the death of Joseph Boakye Danquah.

The remark was made while Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin was addressing the House.

During his submission, an unidentified MP interjected, shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down!” The comment immediately sparked outrage among MPs, with calls for disciplinary action against the individual responsible.

In addressing the House, Speaker Bagbin described the incident as deeply regrettable and unbefitting of a sitting MP.

“In light of this incident, I extend my deepest apologies to Hon. Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle; Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, former First Lady of Ghana and widow of our late industrious President; the family; the chiefs; and all the good people of Anlo Dukor and Anlo land,” he stated.

The Speaker further lamented the conduct exhibited in the chamber, stating, “It is a sad situation when one serving their country must endure such indignity.” He reiterated his strong disapproval of such behaviour, emphasising that “such conduct is dishonourable, and I strongly condemn it as unbecoming of a sitting MP.”

Speaker Bagbin announced that Parliament had commenced a formal investigation to identify the MP responsible for the remark.

He asserted that harsher sanctions would be imposed if the culprit fails to voluntarily come forward within a week as a sign of remorse and honesty.
