Parliament is set to reconvene today, Monday, August 24, for a five-day special sitting following a recall by Speaker Alban Bagbin to consider what he has described as urgent parliamentary business.

The recall comes barely a month after the House adjourned on July 31, 2026, with lawmakers expected to sit from August 24 to August 28.

Speaker Bagbin invoked Order 58(4) of Parliament’s Standing Orders, which empowers him to recall the House during an adjournment when circumstances require Parliament to resume its work.

The special sitting is expected to provide an opportunity for lawmakers to address matters that cannot wait until the next scheduled sitting.

Among the key business before the House is expected to be the consideration of the nominations of Mahama Ayariga as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings as Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology.

The two nominations are expected to form part of the parliamentary processes during the week-long sitting, alongside other urgent matters brought before the House.

Parliament’s return follows the Speaker’s assessment that the outstanding business requires the attention of lawmakers before the House’s next regular sitting.

The special sitting is scheduled to run through Friday, August 28, after which the House is expected to proceed in accordance with its parliamentary calendar.
