The Ghana Police Service says it is seeking a court injunction against the organisation of the “Occupy Julorbi House”, a protest scheduled from Thursday, September 21, to Saturday, September 23, 2023, at the Jubilee House.
By doing so, the police have affirmed that they will refrain from providing protection for the planned picketing at the seat of government.
Although the reason for the court application was not disclosed, the police indicated in a statement on Wednesday, September 20th, that it had duly served the organisers of the protest, Democracy Hub, with a copy of the application.
“The Police have filed an application at the court and successfully served the organisers of the group, identifying itself a as Democracy Hub in connection with the planned demonstration within the vicinity of Jubilee House from Thursday 21st to Saturday 23rd September 2023.”
“As we await the court to determine the matter, we wish to urge the public to take note and disregard any calls from any individuals or groups encouraging them to assemble for a demonstration at the Jubilee House”, the statement added.
The police further asked the organisers to “respect due process in the interest of public order and public safety”.
The demonstration, which was to start from the 37 Trotro Station and continue to the Jubilee House, was to protest, among other things, the heightened levels of corruption and hardships under the ruling administration, according to the organisers.
Earlier in the month, the police prevented the Minority in Parliament from embarking on their #OccupyBoG protest, citing public safety concerns.
