Calls have increased from a section of Ghanaians for the government to release a power rationing schedule following recent outages, locally referred to as “dumsor.”
Although power supply has been inconsistent for the past few months, it has worsened in the past few days, especially in Greater Accra, with households and businesses complaining severely about the state of affairs.
“It is terrible here; I run a cold store, and this electricity situation has made me spend more to repair my heavy-duty fridges almost every week. It’s really affecting my business,” Asiamah, a cold store operator at James Town, lamented.
Hawa, a housewife at Michelle Camp, said, “They should do something about these outages. Although I am at home most of the time, I sell art crafts to my customers remotely, which I use electricity at some point to produce. I also cater for the kids when they return from school. Sometimes the lights go off without warning, which affects my activities for the day. There have been times I have been unable to meet customer orders due to the dumsor.”
Some Ghanaians have also taken to social media to register their anger at authorities, urging an immediate stoppage to the power fluctuations or the provision of a reliable load-shedding schedule.
As of Tuesday, April 22nd, the hashtag #DumsorMustStop has been trending on X, formerly Twitter, with thousands of X users bashing the government over power issues.
The people are not even asking you to fix the problem. They say they understand the issues, so just give them a timetable or schedule so they can plan their lives. And the people are rather branded evil & nation wreckers. Such disrespect. Wow!#DumsorMustStop #DumsorTimetableNow pic.twitter.com/BEAizIcQes

Facebook is no exception.
The Electricity Company of Ghana announced on March 29, 2024, that power supply is stable nationwide and any community that experiences a power outage may be due to a localised fault that would need attention.
However, Ghana Grid Company Ltd., in a letter to the Energy Minister, revealed that it had released load management to the ECG, which the latter is not complying with and hence should be brought to order.
Utilities regulator PURC on April 18 fined the board of the ECG GHC 5.8 million for failing a number of times to adhere to notification timelines with regards to power interruption, although this has been challenged by the board.
In a related event, famed movie actress and producer Yvonne Nelson is rallying Ghanaians to stage a demonstration against the government over dumsor. In a social media post on Tuesday, Yvonne on X called out groups like IMANI Ghana, which fiercely opposed dumsor during the Mahama Administration, and has now become docile about it.
“Imani Ghana, can we organize another vigil? Ive been waiting for you to reach out like you did years back. ( your team made our demo a success ) Im reaching out myself. The NPP and its leadership @NAkufoAddo have taken Ghanaians for granted”, she said.
