Ghana’s teacher unions have given the government until midday on Thursday, September 24, 2026, to resolve outstanding issues relating to the placement of teachers promoted in 2025 and the payment of their salary arrears.
The unions, comprising the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers Association (PRETAG), said government had failed to fully implement an agreement to automatically place all affected teachers and pay the corresponding arrears by the end of September 2026.
In an urgent notice issued on Tuesday, September 22, the unions said the failure to complete the process had generated tension and anger among teachers across the country.
They also cited other unresolved matters, including the renewal of the collective agreement and the payment of deprived-area allowances.
The unions warned that failure to address the outstanding concerns by the stated deadline could result in further action by teachers.
“If by mid-day, Thursday, 24th September, 2026, all the issues are not addressed, the Teacher Unions will not be able to restrain the teachers anymore and whatever happens, the duty bearers should take full responsibility. This is not a threat but a promise.”
The unions said the situation was particularly concerning because the outstanding promotion placements and arrears were linked to an agreement already reached with the government.
They urged the government to take immediate steps to resolve the issues and avert further tension within the teaching profession.
At the same time, the unions called on teachers to remain calm and follow official directives from their leadership.
They also encouraged teachers to participate in any actions formally announced by the leadership of the unions.
