Leader of the Progressive Alliance for Ghana, Dr. John Kpikpi, has issued a strong condemnation of the post-election violence that has erupted across the country following the 2024 general elections, calling for restraint and national unity.
“I unequivocally condemn the post-election violence that has erupted in parts of our nation,” Dr. Kpikpi stated, referencing attacks on state properties, violent protests, and disruptions of electoral processes. He described these incidents as deeply regrettable and antithetical to the democratic values that Ghana has long upheld.
The unrest, reportedly mainly involving supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has included the vandalisation of state properties such as the offices of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and the Electoral Commission.
“Offices in the Eastern Region were set ablaze, and security forces were injured while attempting to restore order,” Dr. Kpikpi noted.
He also addressed alleged attacks on NDC supporters by purported NPP members, labelling them as unacceptable and urging political leaders to exercise restraint.
“I urge all political leaders, especially President-elect John Mahama and the leadership of the NDC and the NPP, to demonstrate statesmanship by reining in their supporters,” he appealed.
Dr. Kpikpi emphasised the need to resolve grievances through peaceful and legal channels. “Ghana’s democracy has long been a beacon of hope across Africa, and these actions threaten to tarnish our global reputation,” he warned, urging all stakeholders to prioritise the nation’s stability over partisan interests.
In addition, Dr. Kpikpi urged the Ghana Police Service and military to protect lives, property, and the democratic process while appealing to civil society and religious organisations to continue advocating for calm and accountability.
“To the people of Ghana, I urge restraint and a renewed commitment to national unity. Elections can never be a justification for lawlessness. In fact, the very opposite; they are for the lawful transition of power.”
“As we navigate this critical period, let us remember that our collective progress is greater than any political victory. Together, we can uphold the peace, stability, and democracy that Ghana represents,” he said.
Dr. Kpikpi reaffirmed his commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure Ghana remains a symbol of democratic resilience on the continent.
