The University of Ghana Business School (UGBS) has launched the UGBS Scholars Scholarship Scheme, a new initiative aimed at providing financial assistance, mentorship and career development opportunities to academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students pursuing business education at the University of Ghana.
The scholarship scheme was officially launched during the 46th Management Day Celebration held at the University of Ghana Business School in Legon on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
The initiative forms part of the school’s broader strategy to promote equitable access to higher education while nurturing the next generation of business leaders equipped to contribute to Ghana’s socio-economic development.
Launching the programme, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, said the initiative reflected the university’s commitment to ensuring that financial hardship did not prevent talented students from accessing quality education and realising their full potential.
Professor Amfo commended the University of Ghana Business School for establishing a scholarship programme that extended beyond tuition support to include mentorship, professional development and practical industry exposure.
She urged alumni, corporate organisations and development partners to support the initiative to ensure its long-term sustainability and wider impact.
Dean of the University of Ghana Business School, Professor Ernest Yaw Tweneboah-Kodua, said the scholarship scheme had been developed in response to the financial challenges faced by many talented students despite their strong academic abilities.
He explained that the programme sought to eliminate financial barriers while creating opportunities for students to develop into ethical and innovative business leaders.
“The launch of the UGBS Scholars Scholarship Scheme is more than the introduction of a financial aid programme. It is an investment in people, in potential and in the future of our country,” he said.
He added that beneficiaries would receive a comprehensive support package designed to promote academic success and career development.
Rather than focusing solely on financial assistance, Professor Tweneboah-Kodua said the programme had been structured to provide mentorship from experienced professionals, internship placements, leadership development opportunities and networking platforms that would expose students to industry.
Chairperson of the UGBS Scholars Scholarship Scheme Committee, Professor Agyapomaa Gyeke-Dako, said the initiative represented the culmination of months of planning and consultation involving faculty, alumni and stakeholders.
She explained that the scholarship was founded on the belief that academic ability should not be limited by economic circumstances.
“Our vision is to ensure that brilliant students are not denied the opportunity to pursue higher education because of financial difficulty,” she said.
Professor Gyeke-Dako said the scheme would identify deserving students through a transparent selection process that considered both academic merit and demonstrated financial need.
