The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has declared a nationwide strike over the government’s continued reluctance to meet their demand for improved working conditions.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Association outlined reasons for their strike, which include the arbitary implementation of office holding allowances without the proper regulatory framework, the non-payment of Tier 2 contributions, and the disparities in the single-spine salary structure.
Others include the non-review of allowances agreed with by the National Labour Commission and the Ghana Tetiary Education Council (GTEC) and the failure of GTEC’s and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission’s (FWSC) to specify promotion criteria for university administrators.
The university administrators demanded a stoppage of any decisions on their conditions of service unilaterally taken by GTEC.
GAUA urged GTEC to hold a stakeholder meeting with university administrators to address their grievances and ensure progression in their careers.
The Association also called on the government to take an interest in resolving their challenges so that the academic calendar of universities will not be negatively affected.
GAUA’s strike adds to the other recent ones already embarked on by the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Teachers of Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
