The Chartered Institute of Bankers Ghana (CIB Ghana) has successfully hosted the National Banking and Ethics Challenge (NBEC), with the University of Ghana (UG) emerging as the overall winner.
The competition, held at the Institute’s premises, brought together 12 universities across Ghana offering banking and finance programmes, each represented by student teams competing for top honours. This year’s challenge was held under the theme: “Building the Next Generation of Trusted Professionals through the National Banking and Ethics Challenge.”
After an intense first round, six universities were eliminated, leaving six institutions to advance to the semi-final stage. The qualifying schools included Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Development Studies (UDS), University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), Wisconsin International University College (WIUC), and UG.
Addressing participants at the opening session, Mr. Robert Dzato, Chief Executive Officer of the Institute, welcomed contestants and expressed confidence in a successful and impactful competition.
“The role of the Chartered Institute of Bankers Ghana goes beyond regulation; it includes promoting the study of banking, strengthening professionalism, and nurturing the next generation of industry leaders,” he stated.
Mr. Dzato explained that the National Banking and Ethics Challenge is designed to equip students with practical knowledge while instilling strong ethical values essential for the banking profession.
“This initiative is not only about competition but about building trust, competence, and character among future bankers,” he added.
He further highlighted the growing interest in the programme, noting that participation has expanded significantly over time.
“We have seen participation grow from five universities to twelve this year, which reflects the increasing relevance of this initiative in bridging the gap between academia and industry,” he said.
According to him, the challenge serves as a critical platform to prepare students for real-world banking by exposing them to industry expectations and ethical considerations.
The University of Ghana emerged winners of the competition. CIB Ghana emphasised that beyond the competition, all participants gained valuable insights, skills, and exposure that will shape their professional journeys, even as the University of Ghana clinched the top prize.
