Voter’s register: EC rejects NDC’s live broadcast request; but party insists

The Electoral Commission (EC) has declined a request from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to broadcast live an upcoming meeting concerning discrepancies in the Provisional Voters Register (PVR) ahead of the December 7 general elections.

In a letter dated September 4, 2024, the NDC urged the EC to permit a live broadcast of the meeting, which is set to take place on September 10, 2024.

However, the EC rejected this request, stating that live coverage of the meeting is unnecessary. The Commission explained that the identification of discrepancies in the PVR by the NDC is not an unusual occurrence and therefore does not warrant a live broadcast.

Despite this, the EC reassured the NDC that it remains committed to ensuring the credibility of the PVR, adding that the meeting will proceed as scheduled, and the Commission will address concerns such as missing names, misplaced voters, and duplicate images.

“The Commission is absolutely committed to free, fair, transparent, peaceful, and credible Elections. However, the Commission does not accept the proposal of a live broadcast of this meeting. Our team is ready to meet with your team on the agreed time,” EC’s letter partly read.

Meanwhile, the party’s Director of Elections, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah insists the party will adopt its own means of broadcasting its meeting with the EC.

According to him, the EC’s stance is contrary to principle of transparency, which “is cardinal to the attainment of free, fair, and peaceful elections.”

He stated in a Facebook post as follows:

“We disagree with the EC and I have communicated same to them.

This deliberate refusal flies in the face of Transparency: Transparency is cardinal to the attainment of Free, Fair and Peaceful elections.

The EC can not escape public scrutiny and forensic audit of the voters register!

Meanwhile, we’ve all observed the LOUD SILENCE of the ruling NPP notwithstanding all these anomalies.

It cannot be lost on us that the NPP stands to benefit illegally from the overt and covert manipulation of the register and the electoral process.

Additionally, the palpable purchased silence from other previously loud-mouthed personalities and institutions that are supposed to call the EC to order is telling!

We are serving notice that the NDC will not tolerate the unfolding day light advance robbery/rigging of Election 2024 to materialise.

This being the case, at today’s meeting at the Corporate office of the EC near the National Cathedral, we shall also serve as the broadcast outlets in the meeting and after the meeting.

We shall not relent!

We shall not falter!!

We shall not rest!!!”
