Abuse of Power? NSS Director Reportedly Bashes Nurses Over Revising Medical Officer Daughter’s Wrongful Prescription

The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Alex Opoku Mensah, is in hot water after being allegedly led by his daughter, who is a house officer at the Manhyia Government Hospital, to verbally abuse a nurse who suggested a replacement of a medical prescription to a patient.

According to reports, Mr. Opoku Mensah stormed into the surgical ward of the hospital, where his daughter is working as a house officer, and verbally abused and threatened the nurse.

Eyewitnesses claim that the medical officer gave a two-year-old convulsion patient the incorrect dosage.

The nurse called the young doctor to correct the incorrect medication after realizing the medical error.

Sources claim that the house officer, who was offended, complained to her father about the situation, who then went to the medical center and verbally abused the nurse.

According to a viral recording cited by The Sikaman Times, Mr. Opoku Mensah is alleged to have criticized nurses and nurses in general for their limited knowledge in medical science as compared to doctors, including his daughter.

Following the incident, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association has called for the sacking of Mr. Opoku Mensah while urging the management of the hospital to “school” his daughter on the tenets of the doctor-nurse working relationship.

“The Public Services Commission and the government in general should immediately dismiss the regional director because he is unfit for the director position he holds in public office,” the GRNMA said in a statement on Tuesday.

The association also urged its local branch in the Ashanti region to report the threats issued by the NSS director to the police.

Meanwhile, the National Service Secretariat says it has invited Mr. Opoku-Mensah for preliminary investigations into the “unfortunate” incident.
