Basic schools across the country will now open on October 3, 2023, for the 2023–2024 academic year after years of random reopening dates occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement signed by a Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, the new date will streamline the academic calendar and bring it to its status before the pandemic.

“Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) wishes to inform you that the reopening date for Basic Schools (KG, Primary, and Junior High School) for the First Term of the 2023/2024 Academic Year is October 3, 2023.”

“This brings the academic calendar back to pre-Covid.”

The GES also thanked education and education-related staff for the patience in performing their responsibilities during the pandemic.

“We wish to also convey to all teaching and non-teaching staff the sincere appreciation of management for their immense support during our efforts to ensure teaching and learning during this difficult period in our country.”

The statement further charged Regional Directors of Education to “communicate and Metro/Municipal/District Directors of Education to inform all Heads of Basic Schools to bring to the attention of parents and guardians and students to take note and prepare accordingly for a smooth and effective academic work.”
