The Convenor of the Coalition Against Galamsey, Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, has lauded the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for responding to the group’s recent petition, calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into illegal mining operations across the country.

In a social media post on Monday, Dr. Ashigbey reiterated the Coalition’s stance that “the law should take its course, regardless of whose interests are affected,” emphasizing that no individual should be shielded from accountability due to political or social influence.

He referenced ongoing investigations involving Akonta Mining Ltd., stating that the two directors and beneficial owners of the company must face justice if found culpable.

“All politically exposed persons and influential individuals involved in this irresponsible and illegal mining will be held accountable,” he wrote.

Dr. Ashigbey also pointed to allegations against several figures, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Aowin and constituency chairmen in Axim and Dunkwa. He urged authorities to expedite investigations into their alleged involvement, as well as probe individuals named in the report authored by former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng.

“A prominent hotel owner is also under our investigation,” Dr. Ashigbey added, warning that “their actions will have consequences.”

“Anyone involved in Galamsey will be subject to the law,” he declared.
