The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana has announced the reopening of its embassy in Washington DC, effective Thursday, 29 May 2025.

The move follows a temporary suspension of operations triggered by administrative and operational irregularities.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, the Ministry disclosed that all Home-Based Staff had been recalled and Local Staff suspended amid efforts to overhaul the embassy’s systems and restore operational integrity. A team of experienced diplomats, led by a senior official from the Ministry, has been assigned to manage the mission during this transitional period.

The Ministry noted that an Information Technology team has already been deployed to reconfigure the embassy’s website and payment platforms, removing all unofficial and unauthorized links from its digital infrastructure. These interventions form part of broader structural reforms aimed at improving service delivery and institutional accountability.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry assured the public that necessary measures have been put in place to clear backlogs that may have resulted from the temporary closure. “Any inconvenience resulting from our necessary interventions is deeply regretted,” the statement said.

Further, the Ministry confirmed that the issues which prompted the closure have been reported to the Auditor-General and Attorney-General for appropriate investigations and potential sanctions.

According to the release, inquiries related to consular services can be directed to the official embassy email at washington@mfa.gov.gh or phone numbers +1 202 686 4520 and +233 240 793 072.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and upholding Ghana’s reputation on the international stage.
