Heavy rains that swept across parts of Greater Accra over the past few days caused flooding in communities around Christian Village and Parakou, with residents blaming the situation on the damaged Dome Bridge.
The bridge near Christian Village was damaged last week after days of intense rainfall weakened sections of the structure, raising concerns among residents and motorists about its safety and impact on drainage in the area.
Following the latest downpour, floodwaters reportedly overflowed into nearby communities, affecting homes, businesses and movement along sections of the road network.
Residents said the damaged state of the bridge has obstructed the smooth flow of water, worsening flooding whenever it rains heavily.
In response to the situation, Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, on Monday toured some of the affected areas to assess the extent of destruction caused by the rains.
The minister inspected the damaged Dome Bridge, drainage channels and flood-hit sections around Christian Village and Parakou as part of efforts to evaluate the scale of the problem and ongoing emergency response measures.
Mr. Adjei also interacted with affected residents, many of whom called for urgent intervention to prevent further destruction and possible loss of lives as the rainy season intensifies.
Officials accompanying the minister indicated that the compromised condition of the bridge has contributed significantly to the flooding situation in surrounding communities, noting that even without the rains any massive flow of water from other communities such as Abokobi will cause flooding.
The minister assured residents that government was taking the matter seriously and would work to address the structural and drainage challenges affecting the area.
