The Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation, Tony Aubynn, has indicated that the proposed petroleum hub, when established, will create employment opportunities for many unemployed Ghanaian youth with expertise in areas related to the project.
According to him, once the hub becomes operational, skilled Ghanaian youth will be absorbed into various sectors of the project, which will go a long way toward reducing unemployment across the country.
Dr. Aubynn made the disclosure on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at the Fiesta Royale Hotel during a strategic engagement between the corporation and some Civil Society Organisation groups in the energy sector.
Speaking on the theme “Advancing Ghana’s Energy Future through Dialogue, Accountability and Collaboration,” he further disclosed that despite the reduction in the size of land allocated for the project, the corporation remains confident about the successful implementation of the initiative.
“So there has been a reduction in the size of the land. Initially we were given 20,000 acres of land which was reduced to 13,000 acres, which in hectares is about 5,000 hectares of land, and that marked the end of the land decision because there was back and forth about whether the land was big or small. So he came in and said, ‘Look, will 5,000 work for you?’ and we said yes, we can work with 5,000. It will not diminish the essence of the project in any way, so we can work with that,” he explained.
Dr. Aubynn also expressed his profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and several ministries for their immense contributions toward ensuring the realisation of the project.
“And I am happy that our ministers—the Minister for Environment and Green Transition, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources John Abu Jinapor, and the Minister for Environment Kofi Armah Buah—are sleeplessly looking for resources for us. In fact, we had a meeting and they are very committed to ensuring that the land acquisition process moves forward as soon as possible. These two gentlemen behind the process are super committed to getting this done, so I am hoping things will be good for us,” he said.
“I can even mention another minister who is in the background pushing—the Minister for Trade and Agribusiness Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare—whose interest lies mostly in the manufacturing aspect of our work,” he emphasised.
Dr. Aubynn further explained that the creation of the petroleum hub is essential at this time, noting that when completed, it will serve as a major reservoir for storing fuel for future use. He cited global tensions, including conflicts involving Iran and the United States, as examples of situations where Ghana could benefit strategically by having the capacity to store and trade petroleum products with other African countries that lack such infrastructure.
