The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) says it has identified two persons who allegedly intervened to prevent the arrest of Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
The development follows an attempted arrest of the MP by EOCO officers on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, in connection with an ongoing investigation.
In a statement, EOCO said the situation escalated during the attempted arrest, forcing its officers to abandon the operation after assessing that further action could endanger public safety.
The Office said it had identified two individuals who, based on the circumstances captured in video footage circulating on social media, allegedly intervened to facilitate the MP’s escape.
“The conduct of these individuals is being assessed and the Office will take such lawful steps as may be appropriate,” EOCO said.
The attempted arrest has attracted public attention after videos emerged showing a confrontation at the scene involving the MP, a woman identified by EOCO as one of its officers, and other individuals.
EOCO said the attempted arrest was part of steps taken to secure the MP’s attendance in connection with an investigation after two invitations issued to him in February 2026 were not honoured.
The Office said the invitations were intended to enable the MP to assist with the investigation.
Following the failed arrest, EOCO said Baffour Awuah proceeded to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary, although Parliament is currently on recess.
The Office said it recognised and respected the constitutional privileges and immunities of Members of Parliament and would operate within the Constitution and applicable laws.
It, however, maintained that parliamentary membership did not automatically bring an investigation to an end.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Membership of Parliament does not, by itself, bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law,” EOCO said.
At the same time, it stressed that it would not take any action inconsistent with parliamentary privilege or other constitutional protections.
