The Ghana Chamber of Mines has officially announced the retirement of its long-serving Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Sulemanu Koney, drawing the curtain on a distinguished career that has spanned more than two decades with the Chamber, including an impactful 10-year tenure at the helm.

Dr. Koney, who rose through the ranks from his initial role as Director of Analysis, Research, and Finance in 2000 to become CEO in 2014, reached the statutory retirement age in April 2024. At the request of the Chamber’s Council, he remained in office until March 2025, offering continued leadership during a key transition period.

His departure marks the end of an era defined by visionary leadership, strategic collaborations, and transformative policies that have helped shape Ghana’s mining industry into a vital driver of economic growth and sustainability.

Throughout his time as CEO, Dr. Koney championed numerous initiatives that strengthened the Chamber’s influence and impact.

These included the advancement of responsible mining practices, the promotion of local content policies, and advocacy for proactive fiscal and environmental frameworks.

Speaking on Dr. Koney’s retirement, the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Mr. Michael Edem Akafia, praised his immense contributions:

“Dr. Koney’s remarkable service and commitment to the Chamber and the mining industry have been truly inspiring. His leadership has left an indelible mark on the industry, and we are immensely grateful for his contributions.”

“On behalf of the Executive Committee, Council, and the entire Chamber, I extend our profound gratitude to Dr. Sulemanu Koney for his years of meritorious service. His impact has been extraordinary, and we wish him the best in his future endeavours,” he added.

Interim Leadership Announced

The Chamber has appointed Mr. Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah, Director of External Relations and Communications, as Acting CEO. Mr. Nantogmah brings over 26 years of experience in the mining sector, with specialised expertise spanning communications, sustainability, environmental management, marketing, stakeholder engagement, and government relations.

Mr. Akafia expressed confidence in the Chamber’s interim leadership, stating:

“We express our sincere appreciation to Ahmed for his long-standing service to the Chamber and for accepting this leadership role at the Secretariat. His wealth of experience and profound industry knowledge will be invaluable as we continue to enhance the mining industry’s role as a vital pillar of Ghana’s economy.”

The Ghana Chamber of Mines reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible mining, driving sector growth, and contributing meaningfully to national development.
