The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the United States as the North American nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of its independence.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President John Dramani Mahama, on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, conveyed a message of congratulations and goodwill to the Government and people of the United States, describing the occasion as an opportunity to celebrate an enduring partnership built over nearly seven decades.
The Ministry noted that Ghana and the United States have maintained cordial and friendly relations since Ghana attained independence in 1957, with the United States among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with the West African nation.
It recalled that the U.S. delegation to Ghana’s independence celebrations, led by then Vice President Richard Nixon and accompanied by civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and diplomat Ralph Bunche, laid a strong foundation for the longstanding ties between the two countries.
According to the Ministry, the bilateral relationship has continued to expand through cooperation in governance, trade, investment, education, infrastructure and social development.
Among the major milestones highlighted were the construction of the Akosombo Dam, the establishment of the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), the Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC), the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), and growing collaboration in trade, investment and the social sector.
The statement also pointed to decades of high-level diplomatic engagements, including visits to Ghana by former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, as well as official visits to the United States by successive Ghanaian Presidents aimed at deepening cooperation.
The Ministry further praised the strong people-to-people ties between Ghanaians and Americans, describing them as a vital pillar of the relationship that continues to promote educational, cultural and economic exchanges.
In his congratulatory message to U.S. President Donald J. Trump, President Mahama expressed confidence that the partnership between the two countries would continue to grow.
“As we join in the celebration of another milestone, it is my deep conviction that the enduring friendship and cooperation between our two countries will continue to be shaped by values and common interests.”
The President said those shared values include a commitment to democratic governance and inclusive development.
“…especially in the areas of the rule of law, human rights and democracy, as well as our shared aspiration for economic prosperity, which fosters a close and enduring partnership between Ghana and the United States.”
President Mahama concluded his message by extending his best wishes to the American people on the landmark anniversary.
“I wish the Government and people of the United States of America a peaceful, joyous and successful 250th anniversary celebration.”
The Ministry said the anniversary provides another opportunity for both countries to reaffirm their longstanding friendship and deepen cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
