Government, teacher unions agree on placement of newly promoted teachers

Teacher unions and the government have agreed to automatically place teachers who passed the December 2025 and February 2026 aptitude tests on their respective new salary scales, with no additional documentation required.

The agreement was reached at an emergency meeting on August 31, 2026, between representatives of the teacher unions and a government team led by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu.

In a joint press release dated September 2, the unions said the two cohorts of teachers who successfully completed the aptitude tests and were subsequently promoted “are not required to complete or submit any document whatsoever” and will instead be placed automatically on their new salary scales.

The unions further said January 2026 has been agreed as the substantive appointment date for both cohorts.

This decision also determines the starting point for the payment of salary arrears. According to the unions, “the effective date for the payment of arrears” for teachers in the two cohorts “shall be January 2026.”

Payments are expected to be made in September 2026, according to the agreement reached with the government.

The unions said about 80,000 teachers are covered by the promotion exercise and acknowledged that the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) may not be able to capture all of them on the September payroll.

In such a situation, they said, “a supplementary pay voucher will be raised” to complete the placement and payment process for teachers from the December 2025 and February 2026 cohorts who successfully passed the aptitude tests.

The latest agreement follows concerns raised by the unions in their August 26 statement regarding the automatic adjustment and placement of newly promoted teachers.

The unions, represented by GNAT General Secretary Thomas T. Musah, NAGRAT President Jacob Anaba and PRETAG President King Ali Awudu, urged teachers to rely on the arrangements outlined in the latest statement.

They also cautioned that “any contrary information to the above” should be disregarded.
