The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced the government’s intention to reintroduce road and bridge tolls to generate revenue for road maintenance and related infrastructure projects.
In line with this objective, the Ministry stated that it is “putting together the modalities for a modern, technologically-driven toll collection system.”
The statement, signed by the Head of the Public Relations Unit, Nasir Ahmad Yartey, indicated that measures are being implemented to ensure an open, transparent, competitive, cost-effective, and fair procurement process.
Mr. Yartey assured the public of the Ministry’s commitment to establishing a modernized tolling system designed to address the current challenges associated with toll collection and road maintenance funding in the country.
This reintroduction follows a pledge made by the Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr. Kwame Governs Agbodza, during his vetting on January 20, 2025. He committed to enhancing revenue collection mechanisms and ensuring the sustainability of road infrastructure development.
Background
On Thursday, November 18, 2021, the Ministry of Roads and Highways directed the immediate discontinuation of toll collection on all public roads and bridges nationwide. This directive, signed by the then Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, cited the negative impact of toll booths on traffic flow and productivity as the reason for the decision.
