From January 1, 2024, it will be mandatory for owners of ride-hailing vehicles such as Uber, Bolt, and Yango, among others, to make quarterly payments of a Vehicle Income Tax (VIT), the Ghana Revenue Authority has announced.

The GRA said in a statement on Thursday that “per Section 22 of Regulations 2016, LI 2244, any commercial vehicle owner that earns income from the operation of a commercial vehicle shall pay income tax quarterly.”

It further stated that “sections 1, 33 and 35 of the Revenue Administration Act 2016 (Act 915) gives the Commissioner General the Authority to give written directives, require any taxpayer to provide information or connect their digital system to the Commissioner’s monitoring platform for the purposes of establishing the correct taxes payable to the State.”

The Authority therefore asked ride-hailing companies operating in Ghana to update their digital platforms to integrate the new tax requirements.

According to the statement, the requirements for adhering to the directives include obtaining a softcopy of the VIT sticker, validating the sticker’s authenticity with the GRA, and submitting a quarterly list of all vehicles on their platforms to the GRA.

It urged ride-hailing vehicle owners to initiate the process of complying with the directive by registering their vehicles at any GRA office via the short code *222#.

The VIT is a tax designed to be collected from commercial transport operators on a quarterly basis.

Due dates for payment of VIT are 15th January, 15th April, 15th July, and 15th October.
