The former chair of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), who was invited by the Office of the Special Prosecutor in May, has revealed that he was arrested upon honouring the invitation.
Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng made the revelation on June 7.
Speaking to the local media yesterday, Professor Frimpong-Boateng revealed that he was arrested on May 16 by the OSP over expenditure-related issues during his work as chairman of the IMCIM, although no formal charges have been slapped on him.
Professor Frimpong-Boateng noted that he was later granted a GHC2 million bail, which saw a friend come to bail him.
According to him, the OSP visited the friend’s house to ensure that anyone in the house could be picked up should Professor not present himself when needed.
In a statement on May 3, the OSP disclosed that it had been invited to answer questions on “suspected corruption and corruption-related offenses in respect of the activities and expenditure of the dissolved Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining.”
This was against the backdrop of a 37-page document he publicized about his work as the IMCIM chair and the alleged impediments key public officials brought his way.
In the document, the renowned physician named prominent members of the ruling and opposition parties, including a close ally to the presidency and legal practitioner, Gabby Asare Otchere Darko; the Director of Operations at the Office of the President, Lord Oblitey Commey; and former MP for Manso-Nkwanta, Joseph Albert Quarm.
Meanwhile, Professor Frimpong-Boateng has stated further that he feels his life is under threat.
He bemoaned the ill treatment he is receiving from the government, considering the sacrificial services he has rendered to the country.
The OSP has not formally commented on the professor’s revelations.
