Four worker unions at public universities who had threatened to embark on a strike on October 5th over their conditions of service have moved the deadline for their intended strike action to October 13th.
In a statement issued by the unions on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, the unions, University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (UTAG), Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH), and the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), indicated that the decision is meant to give the employer and all stakeholders in tertiary education in Ghana one crucial week to reverse the directive that seeks to negatively compromise the conditions of service of university workers.
The unions also urged their members to be calm and cooperative with their leadership while they go through “this trying moment.”
In their initial statement, the unions demanded that the government pay their 2022 book and research allowance, online teaching support allowance, and other non-payroll allowances within a week’s time.
They also called for the implementation of an earlier agreement on market premium or a review of the Single Spine Salary Structure in 2023.
The joint unions further accused the senior management of public universities of excluding vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowance in the computation of their fuel allowance, only using the ex-pump rate.
