Embattled headmaster of Obuasi SHTS, Zakaria Abdulai has resigned as the Juaben Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and withdrawn his candidature for the position of constituency chairman amid allegations against him.
In a letter dated October 20, 2026, and addressed to the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, Mr Abdulai said both decisions took immediate effect.
“I write to formally notify you of my decision to resign from my position as the incumbent Secretary of the Juaben Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with immediate effect,” he stated.
He also formally withdrew from the forthcoming constituency elections, ending his bid to become the constituency chairman.
Mr Abdulai expressed gratitude to friends, relatives and well-wishers who had continued to support him amid the allegations.
“I wish to express my profound gratitude to my friends, relatives, and all well-wishers who have stood by me and maintained their faith in my innocence in the face of the allegations levelled against me and my office,” he said.
He further thanked the NDC for the opportunity to serve the party, describing his involvement as a privilege and expressing his continued commitment to its ideals.
Explaining his next steps, Mr Abdulai said he intended to focus on pursuing lawful means to clear his name.
“At this time, I intend to devote my attention and resources to pursuing all lawful avenues to clear my name and vindicate my position,” he stated.
He expressed hope that he would return to active politics once the matters had been resolved and continue contributing to the party.
His resignation and withdrawal come after the NDC’s Functional Executive Committee directed him to step aside to allow for an unhindered investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
In a statement issued on October 20, the party said the decision was taken in the interest of transparency and accountability, while emphasising that it did not amount to a determination of the merits of the allegations against him.
The party also affirmed that Mr Abdulai remained entitled to the presumption of innocence and said it would be guided by the outcome of the investigation.
