The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly condemned recent acts of vandalism and looting of state property, which have been reported in parts of the country following the December 7 elections.
In a statement issued on December 9, 2024, the party expressed concern over incidents allegedly involving both disgruntled supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and overzealous NDC members.
According to the NDC, some NPP supporters engaged in such acts out of frustration over claims that their parliamentary candidates hoarded state-procured items meant for distribution during the campaign.
Meanwhile, certain NDC supporters are reported to have engaged in similar activities as part of their exuberant celebrations following the party’s electoral victory.
“The NDC hereby condemns in no uncertain terms these acts of lawlessness, whether carried out by NDC supporters or supporters of other parties,” stated Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the NDC.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, stating, “The vandalism of state property, mob justice, and any form of lawless retribution have the potential to undermine the peace and stability of our dear nation, hence unacceptable.”
The NDC called on Ghanaians, especially its members, to exercise restraint during this period. “Comrades, our hard-fought and long-awaited victory has finally arrived. Let’s celebrate this victory responsibly and trust the incoming NDC/Mahama government to do the needful in accordance with the rule of law,” Kwetey added.
The party reiterated its commitment to probity and accountability, promising to uphold the rule of law upon assuming office on January 7, 2025. It also urged all citizens to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure that offenders are held accountable.
“The day of accountability is finally here. Our patience is very critical at this stage,” the statement concluded.
