NPP hits streets today over alleged political witch-hunt

Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are expected to pour onto the streets of Accra today, Tuesday, September 23, 2025, to register their displeasure over what they describe as the “misapplication of justice” under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.

The planned demonstration, which begins at the Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, has been approved by the Ghana Police Service following official arrangements between the organisers and law enforcement.

Protesters are expected to march through designated routes, first presenting a petition to the Inspector-General of Police before proceeding to the Jubilee House, where another petition will be delivered.

In a Facebook post on Monday, the party’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, confirmed the mobilisation efforts and urged members and sympathisers to turn out in their numbers.

“We’re all set for tomorrow. The demo is live! 6am sharp at the Obra Spot. The first petition to the IGP and finally ended at the Jubilee House with the second petition. See you!” he wrote.

The protest comes on the heels of a string of arrests involving senior party officials. Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, was recently detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Several other members and sympathisers of the opposition party, including social media activist “Sir Obama Pokuase”, have also reportedly been questioned or arrested in what the NPP alleges are politically motivated actions.

Party leaders argue that these developments form part of a broader campaign of intimidation and selective justice, aimed at weakening opposition voices.

According to the NPP, the demonstration is intended to draw public attention to what they view as an abuse of state power and to demand fairness, transparency, and respect for the rule of law.

Meanwhile, security agencies say measures have been put in place to ensure that the protest remains peaceful and does not disrupt public order.
