More than 50 New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency chairpersons and leaders of various identifiable groups have picked nomination forms for former Energy Minister, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, to contest the party’s National Chairman position.
The nomination forms were picked on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at the NPP’s national headquarters in Accra, in what supporters described as a demonstration of grassroots backing for Mr Agyarko’s bid to lead the party.
The move comes ahead of the NPP’s internal elections as the party prepares to reorganise its structures and position itself for the 2028 general elections.
According to the campaign, the decision by the constituency chairpersons follows a call made during a conference of NPP constituency chairpersons in Kumasi in 2025, where party leaders urged Mr Agyarko to take up a leadership role in the party’s reorganisation.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation after the forms were picked, the NPP Chairman for the Cape Coast North Constituency, Stephen Kojo Arhin, said Mr Agyarko’s leadership was necessary to strengthen the party ahead of the 2028 elections.
“The NPP needs more than just a party Chairman; we require a leader with the vision, discipline, and strategic depth to unify our ranks and rebuild the grassroots in support of our flagbearer. Hon. Boakye Agyarko is the most experienced strategist for this critical moment in our history,” he said.
Mr Arhin said the group’s support for Mr Agyarko was also driven by the need to secure victory for the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in the 2028 presidential election.
He said the party required a National Chairman capable of coordinating its grassroots structures and rebuilding confidence among its members following its performance in the 2024 elections.
Mr Agyarko, in response, expressed gratitude to the constituency chairpersons, identifiable groups and supporters for backing his candidature.
He pledged that, if elected, he would work to build a stronger and more united NPP capable of providing the necessary support for Dr Bawumia to win the 2028 presidential election.
He also expressed his commitment to helping the party secure a majority of parliamentary seats in the 2028 elections.
The campaign said the nomination exercise represented an important step in what it described as a broader movement to strengthen the NPP’s organisational structures and promote unity ahead of the next general election.
The campaign is being led by Hon. Henry Quartey, with Vincent Frimpong Manu serving as spokesperson and George Krobea Asante as Communications Director.
