The National Peace Council (NPC) has issued an urgent appeal for calm and restraint following a spike in political tensions across the country.
The statement comes in the wake of the recent arrests of several political figures over controversial public comments that allegedly violate national laws.
In an official press release dated May 20, 2026, the statutory body tasked with conflict prevention and resolution expressed deep concern over the unfolding political climate, warning that the nation’s stability hinges on responsible public discourse.
“The National Peace Council (NPC) is deeply concerned about the rising political tensions following the recent arrests of some political actors over comments they allegedly made that purportedly flout the laws of the country,” the statement read.
Operating under its legislative mandate established by Act 818, the Council firmly urged “calm and restraint from all sides” to prevent further friction.
The NPC reminded citizens and political leaders alike that the foundations of Ghanaian democracy require strict adherence to legal norms.
“The National Peace Council reminds all Ghanaians that the rule of law, due process, and respect for constitutional rights as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana are non-negotiable pillars of our democracy,” the Council noted.
It called for immediate “moderation, circumspection, and tolerance by actors in the media and public spaces.”
With tensions threatening to spill into the public sphere, the Council directed specific appeals to state law enforcement agencies and the judiciary, urging them to execute their mandates without prejudice.
Simultaneously, the Council issued a stern warning to political parties, party communicators, and media commentators both within Ghana and in the diaspora.
The NPC implored these actors “to refrain from making unsubstantiated, inflammatory statements and engaging in actions that have the potential to incite violence in the country,” adding that individuals must remain highly mindful of how their utterances impact “national cohesion and stability.”
Emphasizing that political disagreement is natural but must be managed civilly, the NPC added: “The NPC reiterates the fact that Ghana’s stability depends on our ability to disagree in our public discourse without resorting to abusive language or violence. We entreat the citizenry to act with responsibility and civility in accordance with the law.”
To actively mitigate the crisis, the Council announced plans to leverage its institutional frameworks to bring political leaders to the negotiating table.
The Council confirmed that, as part of its quarterly trust-building platform, it will “hold a meeting in the next few days to dialogue with the leadership of the parties to find lasting solutions to this development and prevent escalation of the situation.”
