The Ghana Police Service has arrested the alleged mastermind behind the Bupe market robbery and murder of two mobile money vendors in the Savannah Region, following an intelligence-led operation.
The suspect, identified as Alaji Moro Beliko, also known as Alaji Yakuba, Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, was accused of contracting armed robbers and supplying them with weapons to attack traders carrying large sums of money at the Bupe market.
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said the suspect was identified as the alleged mastermind of the June 29, 2026 attack in which two mobile money vendors were robbed of about GH¢30,000.
“On 5th September 2026, the police intelligence directorate headquarters received intelligence on the whereabouts of suspect Alaji Moro Beliko,” the IGP said.
A police team subsequently proceeded to the Bupe market area and placed the suspect under surveillance. According to the police, the suspect attempted to escape during the operation and was shot.
“He got shot and later died from gunshot wounds,” Mr Yohuno said.
The development followed the earlier arrest of Yakuba Uman, 28, in connection with the robbery. Police said one pump-action gun, five live BB cartridges and one single-barrel gun believed to have been used in the robbery were recovered.
The police said intelligence operations had since been intensified in the area to protect traders and other community members.
The IGP also disclosed that three suspects had been arrested in connection with a series of armed robberies in Bupe, Tamale and Mion, allegedly involving two AK-47 assault rifles and a pump-action gun.
The suspects—Yakuba Oma, Abdul Alassan Kudus and Abdul Rahman Haruna, alias Saga—are in police custody assisting investigations, while efforts continue to arrest other alleged accomplices and retrieve the remaining weapons.
The police said the suspects were also linked to the robbery and murder of a mobile money vendor at Fufuso near Damangu Junction earlier in 2026.
