The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a robbery gang allegedly targeting gold dealer shops, mining sites and communities in parts of the Western North Region, arresting five suspects and recovering three AK-47 assault rifles and 357 rounds of ammunition.
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, said the arrests followed sustained intelligence-led operations conducted between August and September 2026 in the Wasakropon, Diaso, Dome, Abufo Camp and Manso enclaves.
The operation also resulted in the death of one suspect and the recovery of five magazines and two vehicles.
“The Ghana Police Service, through a series of sustained intelligence-led operations, has dismantled a robbery gang responsible for a number of attacks targeting gold dealer shops, mining sites and communities,” the IGP said.
The suspects arrested include Clinton Mauli, 33; Richmond Mason, alias Master B; Daniel Safo, alias Abedi; and Prince Duca.
The police said another suspect, Seydou Salifu, 40, who was linked to robbery incidents at Sakam near Obuasi and was standing trial over the alleged robbery of gold bullion at Abufo in July 2025, died during the operation.
The IGP said the crackdown formed part of broader intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling armed robbery networks and improving security across the country.
He disclosed that police operations in other parts of the country had also led to arrests and the recovery of firearms.
In a separate operation, five suspects were arrested in connection with the robbery and murder of a 14-year-old girl at Agona Fie near Agona Nkwanta, with police recovering two locally manufactured pistols, five BB cartridges, a metal bar and two cutlasses.
The police administration has deployed special teams to affected communities to strengthen security and prevent further attacks.
