The Ghana Police says it is investigating some recent remarks of the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, on an Accra-based radio station.
Mustapha is alleged to have urged voters to arm themselves with guns, machetes, or anything they can lay their hands on at the polling stations on the day of the election.
“I’ve told our leaders that if possible, let’s prepare twice the NPP and wait for them. When you are going to the polling station, put a cutlass in your pocket,” he reportedly said on Okay FM on Wednesday.
Mustapha further alleged that some MPs do carry weapons on themselves on election day during visits to polling stations as a means of protection.
But, on Thursday, the police said it has initiated investigations into the comments, adding that it will not allow anyone to undermine the peace of the country.
“The Police will continue to work with other sister security agencies diligently and patriotically to maintain the peace and security in our country which has made Ghana a beacon of hope on the continent and beyond”
“We wish to assure the public that under our watch no one will be allowed to undermine the peace, security, law and order in our beloved country,” the statement from the police read.
The NDC is seeking to regain power in the 2024 elections under the leadership of former President John Mahama.
