Senior journalists, particularly those in the sporting fraternity, are planning to lead a protest against the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry for Youth and Sports for their mismanagement of football in recent years.
The demonstration, which is expected to draw thousands of football followers across the country, has been scheduled for February 14, 2024.
In an interview with the media after formally notifying the police, the lead convenor of the demonstration, Saddick Adams, expressed satisfaction with the reception of the police.
“The police were very open, and we were marvelled by the interest they howed. They have demonstrated that they are very keen on the game. The conditions they have given us are very favourable.”
“We have no hatred against anyone. It is a peaceful walk. We had to do this to let them know we are not happy with the state of affairs of our football,” the Head of Sports at Angel Broadcasting Network (ABN) said.
“What we are demanding is that this game, for which our forefathers sacrificed everything to make it what it has become, is dying. Funds are not used for the purpose for which they are obtained; by this time, we should have a national training complex where footballers can camp and train. We must fix our league so it can bring the excitement it deserves while boosting other sectors of the economy; we should reduce the expenditure on tournaments so that the money can be judiciously utilised in other aspects of the game,” he furthered.
Other convenors of the protest are Patrick Osei Agyeman (Countryman Songo), Veronica Commey, Nana Yaw Kesseh, and Odiahenkan Kwame Yeboah.
Last Tuesday, the GFA, in a statement, rendered an apology to Ghanaians for the Black Stars poor performance in the 2023 AFCON. It also promised to review the overall structure of the team, including its strategies, training, and compensation.
Nonetheless, a wider section of the Ghanaian people are calling for a more thorough approach, including an overhaul of the current structure of the local football governing body.
