Organisers of the nationwide “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration on Thursday presented a petition to the Presidency, alleging that the government was undermining democratic governance, intimidating political opponents and interfering with the administration of justice.
The protest, which formed part of a coordinated nationwide demonstration led by the NPP, saw party leaders and supporters march through the capital before presenting their petition at the Jubilee House.
Speaking before the petition was presented, a representative of the demonstrators reiterated that the voices of young people would not be subdued by the intimidation of the ruling administration.
“On behalf of the New Patriotic Party, we are here this afternoon to hand over this petition to the Presidency and the entire state agencies to let them know that our voices will not be subdued as young people. We will not be intimidated by the tactics and the antics of the NDC,” the representative of the protesters said.
The representative argued that democratic freedoms were under threat, claiming that young people were increasingly being targeted over their political views.
“Our democracy is under attack. You now find young people who make posts and they get arrested. There are specific courts that these people are being taken to,” the speaker alleged.
Madam Nana Yaa Jantuah, a presidential staffer, who received the petition acknowledged the significance of the day and assured the protesters that their concerns would reach the President.
“I want to assure you that I am a senior member of government and this petition will directly get to the President,” she said.
