“We have more that binds us together” – Bawumia urges healing, unity at NPP thanksgiving service

The newly elected presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for reconciliation and unity within the party following his victory in its presidential primaries.

Speaking on Sunday at a National Thanksgiving Service held at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Dr. Bawumia addressed party members, leaders and supporters, urging them to consolidate efforts as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the intensity of the internal contest, noting that competitive elections can sometimes affect relationships within political organisations.

“We have been through a gruelling election cycle. One that has the potential to have caused wounds and strained relationships. Elections can leave scars that may not show on the surface but can sometimes cut deeply,” he said.

He appealed to party members to move beyond disagreements that may have arisen during the campaign period and to prioritise unity.

“I want to ask us all from the bottom of my heart to forgive each other for some of the unpalatable things we may have said against one other during this election cycle,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

“Healing will not come from silence. It will come from speaking up on what binds us together and working towards it. As a family, we have more that binds us together, than what we differ on,” he added.

Referencing scripture, Dr. Bawumia said he draws inspiration from Psalm 118:22, stating: “The Stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.”

He further urged party members to set aside internal divisions and refocus on shared principles.

“Let us put behind us personal grudges, internal suspicions, and factional lines. Let us rebuild trust among ourselves. Let us return to the values that built this party: service, competence, respect for institutions, and belief in the Ghanaian people,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia described the current period as the start of preparations toward the next general election.

“What we have to do, is to deepen our concentration on what we have in common and put less emphasis on what we differ on. This is the beginning of our journey to win back the trust and love of the Ghanian people,” he stated.

The thanksgiving service concluded with prayers for national peace and party unity.
