Wontumi withdraws challenge against GH¢50m bail

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—has officially withdrawn his legal challenge against the GH¢50 million bail imposed on him by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

A notice filed at the Criminal Division of the High Court in Accra confirms that the application, which sought to contest the bail conditions, has been wholly discontinued.

The document, dated June 2, 2025, was submitted by his lawyer, Gary Nimako Marfo of Marfo & Associates.

The EOCO and the Attorney General’s Department were named as respondents.

The motion, initially filed on May 30, was scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, June 3. However, the sudden withdrawal occurred just a day prior, raising speculation about behind-the-scenes negotiations or a shift in legal strategy.

Sources close to the matter suggest the move may be tactical, potentially linked to discussions between Wontumi’s legal team and state prosecutors. Unconfirmed reports indicate that senior figures within the NPP attempted to satisfy the bail conditions by presenting documents covering landed property.

However, EOCO reportedly could not authenticate the documentation before the close of business on Friday, May 30.

Chairman Wontumi has been in EOCO custody since May 27 over allegations of financial misconduct and other organized criminal activities.

His legal team had previously described the GH¢50 million bail as excessive, arguing that it infringed on his constitutional right to personal liberty.
