The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has revealed that 18,930,944 SIM cards have been registered since the process started in October last year.
This represents 44.28% of all SIM cards issued so far.
Hailing stakeholders for the “significant success,” she advised that more can be done considering the targets to be achieved.
She disclosed that 28,959,006 (representing 67.28% of SIM cards issued) cards were registered but only up to the first phase of the exercise, known as Stage 1, urging individuals who are yet to fully complete the process to do so or risk losing their SIM cards as well.
The Minister also disclosed that there are 13,720,687 distinct counts of Ghana Cards, which is evidence that approximately 14 million Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians have re-registered their SIM cards.
According to Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful, Stage 1 SIM cards will be disabled starting on October 31, while Stage 2 SIM cards will be blocked “progressively.” Also, the end of November will see the deactivation of data-only SIM cards.
She further said that sim cards outside of Ghana and amputees would receive particular consideration. She warned that anyone who had registered more than 10 SIMs using their Ghana Card would have the additional sims cancelled.
Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful stated that she will keep working with the National Identification Authority (NIA) to speed up the Ghana Card procurement process.
