The Ghanaian football community is in mourning following the tragic death of Berekum Chelsea winger Dominic Frimpong, who was killed after an armed robbery attack on the club’s team bus on Sunday evening.
According to reports from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and multiple media outlets, the incident occurred as the team was returning from a Ghana Premier League match against FC Samartex.
Armed men reportedly blocked the road and opened fire on the bus, forcing players and officials to flee for safety.
Frimpong, aged 20, was struck in the head during the chaos. He was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead. He is reported to be the only fatality from the attack, although some players and staff are said to have been injured or traumatised during the incident.
The GFA described the event as a deeply shocking tragedy, extending condolences to the player’s family, teammates, and the entire Berekum Chelsea fraternity.
The association also confirmed that security measures for team travel across the league would be reviewed in response to the incident.
Frimpong, born in August 2005, was regarded as one of the promising young talents in the Ghana Premier League.
He had made 13 appearances for Berekum Chelsea during the current season and scored two goals. The winger had also spent time on loan at Aduana FC before joining Chelsea, where he was steadily establishing himself in top-flight football.
