The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), has declared a nationwide strike starting February 20, 2025, in protest against the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.

CLOGSAG’s National Executive Council announced the strike after a meeting on February 11, citing concerns over political interference in civil service appointments.

According to Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe, the appointment of Botchway, a former District Chief Executive for Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa and known NDC activist, breaches a 2017 Supreme Court ruling that upholds political neutrality in the Civil and Local Government Service.

The Association has urged President John Mahama to withdraw the appointment, emphasising that political affiliations undermine the impartiality of the service.

Deputy Executive Secretary Kojo Krakani warned of the negative impact of such appointments and reiterated CLOGSAG’s commitment to preserving the integrity of the service.

CLOGSAG referenced a similar protest in 2022 against the appointment of Mrs. Henrietta Lamptey, which resulted in a pending court case challenging the selection process.

The Association maintains that the Head of Civil Service must be involved in such appointments, as stipulated by law.
