An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced social media influencer Camilla Alhassan, 43, to one year in prison after she pleaded guilty to charges of offensive conduct and publication of false news.
The conviction stems from a series of TikTok videos posted between June 30 and July 5, 2026, in which Alhassan made allegations involving President John Dramani Mahama and the government’s response to victims of the June 29 floods.
According to the prosecution, Alhassan claimed in the videos that the President had sacrificed 32 cows to secure political power. She also alleged that the government’s distribution of sanitary pads to flood victims was intended to conceal the purported sacrifices.
Speaking to journalists after the ruling on Thursday, July 16, defence counsel Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu said the court struck out a separate charge of electronic abuse, ruling that it lacked the jurisdiction to determine that offence.
He noted that the conviction was based solely on the counts of offensive conduct and publication of false news.
Mr Bonsu said the defence appealed for leniency during sentencing. However, the court held that the increasing incidence of similar offences warranted a custodial sentence that would serve as a deterrent.
The court subsequently sentenced Alhassan to one year in prison on the offence of offensive conduct.
