Ghanaians all over the country are in anticipation of Sunday evening’s address by President Akuffo Addo as he speaks to the dire economic straits facing the country.
Some sections of the citizenry, who have severally criticised the President for his apparent silence in the midst of the economic hardships, will, from 8pm, have the opportunity to hear from the first man of the land.
President Akufo-Addo is expected to provide updates on the ongoing IMF discussions, the Cedi depreciation, and the high rate of inflation.
He is also expected to announce cost-cutting measures his administration will implement to free up the government’s budget in its bid to ensure fiscal discipline.
According to a communication by the Presidency on Sunday afternoon, President Akufo-Addo has already had “broad consultations” with various stakeholders, including the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Ghana National of Commerce and Industry, Ghana Association of Banks, Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Market Women, Private Enterprise Federation and Organised Labour.
Some pressure groups and political opponents have already expressed doubts about whether the President will provide any concrete road map that will improve the conditions of Ghanaians.
Earlier in the week, the flagbearer of the largest opposition party, John Dramani Mahama, in a national address, chided the Akufo-Addo government for running the economy into debt and year-on-year excessive budget deficits.
Mr. Mahama also rejected claims that the NDC would have performed abysmally under the present conditions.
