A major fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company Limited’s Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region has disrupted power supply to several parts of the country, prompting an emergency response to stabilise the national grid.
According to a press statement issued by GRIDCo on Thursday, April 23, 2026, the incident occurred at approximately 2:01 p.m. at the Akosombo Substation, a critical installation in Ghana’s electricity transmission network.
The company confirmed that the fire has affected operations and power generation, leading to outages in some areas. While the full extent of the disruption is yet to be determined, GRIDCo acknowledged that the incident has had a noticeable impact on electricity supply nationwide.
Emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to the scene and are working around the clock to assess the situation and implement immediate remedial measures. GRIDCo indicated that a comprehensive evaluation is currently underway to determine the scale of the damage and guide restoration efforts.
“The technical teams are actively working to manage the situation, stabilise the system, and minimise disruptions,” the statement noted.
The Akosombo Substation plays a strategic role in transmitting electricity generated from key sources, including the Akosombo Dam, to distribution networks across the country. Any disruption at the facility typically has wide-ranging implications for both residential and industrial consumers.
GRIDCo has assured the public that every effort is being made to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. However, it did not provide a specific timeline for full restoration of power.
The company also urged the public to remain calm, emphasizing that the situation is under control and being handled with urgency and professionalism.
