The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has assured the public that no military personnel will be stationed at polling stations during the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
In a statement issued by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, the GAF emphasised its role in ensuring a peaceful electoral process, reiterating that its presence will be limited to standby support.
“The primary responsibility for election security remains with the Ghana Police Service (GPS),” the statement noted, adding, “The military will only be deployed upon request by the GPS. This collaborative approach ensures that the elections proceed smoothly and peacefully while maintaining law and order.”
To ensure transparency and prevent misunderstandings, the GAF urged the public to report any individuals claiming to be military personnel, wearing military-patterned attire, or posing as GAF personnel at polling stations.
“Such incidents should be reported to the nearest police station or through the GPS toll-free numbers 18555 or 0800 311 311.”
The statement underscored the significance of safeguarding the electoral process, urging swift action against individuals or groups to ensure security and integrity.
The GAF further encouraged Ghanaians to exercise their civic responsibilities peacefully, cooperate with security personnel, and avoid actions that could disrupt the peace.
“We reiterate our commitment to safeguarding the stability and sovereignty of the nation whilst protecting the integrity of the election process,” Brigadier General Aggrey-Quashie affirmed.
Some civil society groups and the public had asked the government to clarify the military’s role in the elections, warning against possible incidents of brutality seen in recent polls.
