A major technical fault at the Ghana Gas Processing Plant has disrupted gas supply to thermal power producers, triggering electricity outages in parts of the country.
In a joint statement issued on April 15, 2026, Ghana National Gas Company and GRIDCo confirmed that the incident was caused by the complete failure of a key control system within the plant.
“The Ghana Gas Processing Plant has experienced a significant technical fault following the complete failure of the Burner Management System (BMS) controller for the Heat Medium System (HMS),” the statement said.
According to the agencies, preliminary checks show the affected system has been extensively damaged and will require full replacement, forcing operators to shut down the plant as an emergency measure.
“This unforeseen development has necessitated an emergency shut-down of the plant, leading to a temporary curtailment of gas supply to thermal power plants,” the statement explained, adding that the situation “has resulted in power supply disruptions in some parts of the country.”
Engineers have since been deployed to work around the clock to resolve the fault, as authorities conduct further technical and safety assessments.
“A comprehensive technical and safety risk assessment is currently underway to determine the most effective and secure pathway for restoring operations in the shortest possible time,” the statement noted.
Despite the setback, officials expressed cautious optimism about a quick turnaround.
“Subject to the outcome of ongoing assessments, Ghana Gas will commence processes to restore operations within the course of today,” the statement added.
The companies assured the public that updates will be provided as work progresses, while appealing for patience.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding and cooperation,” the statement said.
