More than 500,000 final-year Senior High School students across Ghana are commencing the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination today, beginning with the Oral English paper.
This year’s session is particularly significant as it marks Ghana’s official return to the unified regional examination schedule.
The country is once again testing alongside its West African neighbors after several years of administering independent papers due to the academic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The West African Examinations Council has confirmed that all logistical arrangements are finalized to ensure the examination proceeds smoothly across the country.
John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at the council, stated during a media interview on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, that comprehensive measures are in effect to maintain the integrity of the process.
In a strategic move to prevent leaks and discourage malpractice, the council intentionally delayed the printing of question papers to limit their exposure before the scheduled test dates.
Mr. Kapi assured all stakeholders, including candidates, parents, and school administrators, that the necessary materials for every center are prepared for timely delivery.
He emphasized that the council is confident in its ability to adhere strictly to the established timetable.
Over the past few years, the council has increased its efforts to eliminate examination irregularities by implementing stricter security protocols, improving monitoring systems, and working closely with national security agencies.
The examination will continue over the coming weeks at hundreds of centers nationwide, covering both core and elective subjects.
