The three pre-tertiary teacher unions, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), have suspended their nationwide strike following negotiations with the government and other stakeholders.
The industrial action, which began on Friday, September 25, 2026, was suspended on Friday, October 9, after engagements involving the Council of State and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
The suspension brings to an end two weeks of industrial action that disrupted teaching and learning in public basic and pre-tertiary schools across the country.
The unions embarked on the strike over outstanding concerns relating to their conditions of service, including promotions, salary adjustments, deprived-area allowances and the review of their collective agreement.
The negotiations sought to address the concerns raised by the unions and secure a resolution that would facilitate the resumption of academic activities.
Following the suspension, teachers are expected to return to their classrooms on Monday, October 12, to resume teaching and learning.
The return to school is expected to restore normal academic activities in affected institutions, although discussions on the outstanding issues are expected to continue.
