The Government of Ghana has declined a proposed GH¢20 million donation from MTN Ghana to support Ghanaians affected by recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement dated August 26, 2026, said it had become aware of media reports suggesting that MTN Ghana was preparing to make the donation to victims of the attacks.
According to the Ministry, the reports attributed the intended donation to an interview granted by MTN Ghana Board Chairman, Dr. Ishmael Yamson.
While commending MTN for the gesture, the government said it had decided not to accept the offer because adequate arrangements had already been made to support the evacuation and reintegration of affected Ghanaians.
“The Government of Ghana commends MTN for the offer, however, we respectfully decline,” the Ministry stated.
It said the government’s position had already been communicated directly to the Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MTN when they met the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on August 14, 2026.
The Ministry further assured that the government remained committed to providing humanitarian, evacuation and reintegration support for every Ghanaian brought back from harm’s way.
It added that a comprehensive account of the total cost of the evacuation exercise would be presented to the public after its conclusion, as part of efforts to promote transparency and accountability.
The government also reiterated its commitment to creating a favourable business environment for international brands operating in Ghana, regardless of their country of origin.
“The welfare of all Ghanaians remains our utmost priority,” the Ministry said.
