Popular media outfits MyJoyOnline.com and CitiNewsroom.com on Monday misreported the scheduled demonstration by the NPP and other political groups against the alleged attack on the judiciary, purportedly due to the wrongful use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.
In posts captured by The Sikaman Times between 6:09 a.m. and 6:12 a.m. on Monday, 5th May 2025, the above-mentioned news platforms — which published significantly similar stories — contained inaccuracies in their reportage.
For instance, part of the post listed the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) as a participant in the planned demonstration, which is incorrect.
In an official letter dated 26th April, GUM categorically asserted that the party would not participate in the May 5th demonstration being organised against the Chief Justice’s removal.
Another section of the two posts sought to highlight the supposedly tense nature of the demonstration in light of an upcoming general election.
However, the last major election — the 2024 general elections — was held almost five months ago, making this claim misleading.
While AI enhances the efficiency and speed of news reporting, its misuse has become a growing concern for many stakeholders.
Speaking at the World Press Freedom Day and Honours Night in Accra on Friday, GJA President Albert Dwumfour, while lauding the role AI technologies play in freeing journalists from some levels of manual checks to focus on more in-depth reporting, urged them to use the tools responsibly to protect the integrity and credibility of the profession.
“The increasing sophistication of AI-generated content raises concerns about the mass production of fake media, which can be difficult to distinguish from authentic content,” Albert Dwumfour said.
